We are a New Zealand-based registered charity.

Striving to bring enjoyment to children's lives, our current focus is on the lack of facilities in New Zealand that cater to disabled children.

Our mission! To make New Zealand the most disability-friendly region in the world. Let's start with playgrounds. We have reached our first target: contributing $10,000 towards a wheelchair swing for Waipu Park.

To provide more events for our disabled children, their parents, and siblings to enjoy togetherness.

More usable and wheelchair-friendly outdoor sensory programs and equipment in public spaces. Our mission is to make every disabled child welcome in New Zealand.

What the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) does:

  • Provide free, confidential and independent help, information and advice to anyone
  • Help people to know and understand their rights under the law, the steps they need to take to resolve their issues and how to access the services they need.
  • CAB is ‘a universal service’ – this means we help anyone with any question or issue. For example; your employment rights, residential tenancy disputes, signing a tenancy agreement, returning faulty goods, parenting, separation and relationship property issues, immigration visas, applying for a new passport, citizenship, fences and trees..
  • Our Service is provided by around 30 skilled, trained, volunteer bureau interviewers

How to contact CAB Ōtepoti Dunedin

  • Call Dunedin direct on 03 471 6166 OR
  • Call the nationwide freephone on 0800 367 222 (maybe answered nationwide)
  • Email CAB via website online enquiry at https://www.cab.org.nz/find-a-cab/contact-us/
  • Call in at 155 Princes Street. (phone first at either 10 am or 1 pm to check how busy we are)
  • CAB hours Mon-Thurs 10.00 am – 4.00 pm, Fri 10.00 am – 1.00 pm

How it works when someone contacts CAB

  • CAB is friendly, welcoming, empathetic, respectful and non-judgemental.
  • The client will be asked what they have done so far and what they would like to happen. All the relevant facts will be gathered that will determine the client's rights and options.
  • The bureau interviewer will investigate and research the client’s options using the CAB comprehensive online knowledge base. Options will be considered and this researched information will be presented to the client. This is so the client can make an informed decision - educating and empowering people.
  • Further assistance will be offered to help the client take action if that is appropriate. This might be providing for example - Language assistance for those who have English as a Second Language, writing a letter for someone if literacy is an issue or providing guidance and access to online services in our office

The CAB website is a powerful resource with thousands of articles and information about people's rights under the law. The information is up-to-date and accurate so people can have confidence they are reading quality, credible information about their rights - written in plain English. www.cab.org.nz.

CAB also has a new ‘youth’ website https://youth.cab.org.nz/ highlights many of the key issues for youth embarking on those ‘firsts’ in adult life.

CAB has 3 Language support options available to use with clients

  • The Language Assistance Service Connecting Now which we can access on demand on the phone if needed by a client (no booking required)
  • CAB volunteers around NZ who can offer the CAB service of information and advice in another language
  • Te Whatu Ora Southern interpreters face-to-face with ourselves and the client

The other key part of our Service is that CAB helps connect people to the Services, clubs, activities and support organisations they need – connecting people and communities.

CAB has one of the most comprehensive community directories in Aotearoa – we provide and maintain an online community directory of over 35,000 Services and organisations nationwide

Comcol Southland, located in Invercargill, provides a FREE Youth Service for 16 – 19 years and our focus is on supporting our taiohi into education, training, work based-learning, and employment. But every day we do so much more. Our youth coaches provide intensive, tailored support to identify each individual’s goals and the best path to reach them. Our wider communities also play an important role for our coaches, and we work collaboratively with many community organisations to provide a fully invested community wrap-around service. Our mahi, along with important wider community support, seeks to remove any barriers to success and create a better future for each and every young person we have the privilege of working alongside. Youth Service is a proven approach to working with young people. This will help young people gain the skills to find a job and have an independent future. Some young people will work with a Youth Service provider as part of getting financial support from Work and Income. This includes young people who are receiving Youth Payments, Young Parent Payments or receive support as a partner of a specified beneficiary. Our Rangatahi, our kaupapa, our foundation for action, is finding solutions for our rangatahi to gain independence through education, training, work-based learning and employment. Many of our rangatahi come to Comcol with low achievement in terms of qualifications, literacy, and personal experience. Developing opportunities to experience success is a key aspect on their pathway to positive growth. Positive caring relationships are our strength and celebrating success and achievement is an integral pathway to personal development and independence.

Complex Chronic Illness Support provide qualified one on one facilitator and group support to people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), some Dysautonomia’s (POTS and Orthostatic Intolerance), and Long COVID.

We are well aware that these conditions do not stand alone, that they often come with co-morbidities. We are NOT a medical agency; we are a social support agency.  This means that we can work with the entire family and be holistic in our care.  We support the medical care provided by health professionals and allied health professionals.  We can also provide names of specialists you can access.

We walk alongside our members on their journey towards wellness (whatever wellness may look like for them).  We provide holistic and completely non-judgemental support.

We teach symptom management and provide the resources to give members a personalised toolkit to manage their condition, within their capacity/capabilities. With our support, people with complex chronic illnesses can, in time, develop an increased ability to participate in family, social and community life, and lead a life that is fulfilling and meaningful for them.

We also provide low-level advocacy for people needing support with Health Professionals, MSD, and workplaces, as required.
